Bitterroot Mountains Snowshoeing Adventure
Description
Experience the quiet beauty of a Montana winter on a guided snowshoeing adventure into the Bitterroot Mountains. Beginning and ending in Missoula, this approximately six-hour day tour travels 40–60 minutes south through the Bitterroot Valley before climbing toward the snow-covered mountains and forests that define this spectacular corner of western Montana.
At the trailhead, we'll strap on our snowshoes and head into the winter landscape. The route will take you through snow-covered forests and mountain terrain, with opportunities to enjoy sweeping views of the Bitterroot Mountains and surrounding valleys. Along the way, your guide will bring the landscape to life with interpretation of the plants and wildlife that call these mountains home, the geological forces that built the Bitterroot Range, and the people who have lived in and traveled through this landscape for thousands of years.
We'll provide each guest with a packed lunch to carry and enjoy along the trail, giving us a chance to stop, refuel, and take in our surroundings. Winter also offers a unique opportunity to slow down and notice the details—animal tracks crossing the snow, evergreen forests adapted to harsh mountain conditions, and the signs of wildlife that might otherwise go unnoticed. After our snowshoe, we'll warm up with hot coffee, tea, or hot chocolate before making the drive back to Missoula.
Winter conditions in the Bitterroot Mountains can vary considerably, and our exact route may change depending on snowfall, weather, and trail conditions. Guests should come prepared with warm layers, waterproof winter clothing, sturdy boots, and a sense of adventure. No previous snowshoeing experience is necessary, but guests should be comfortable hiking for several hours over snowy and uneven terrain.
