Soak in the serene beauty of Montana's rivers with a full-day fly fishing adventure, transforming your outdoor excursion into a cherished pastime. Starting in the Whitefish or Kalispell area, the trip begins with an easy meet-up at a local river access point.

Your guide will provide top-quality rods, review safety protocols, and share strategic tips before you embark on a drift boat. No prior experience is required; you'll learn the fundamentals of fly fishing with a brief orientation on the water.

Throughout the 7-8 hour journey, enjoy picturesque mountain views as your guide navigates the waters, helping you find easy currents and abundant trout. Receive focused instruction on casting techniques, fly selection, and reading seams, riffles, and tailouts. The trip balances instruction and fishing, offering personalized coaching to hone foundational skills.

Explore prime fishing locales like sheltered pockets, shaded banks, and tranquil pools, with expert advice on approach, leader selection, and matching the hatch.

Midway, take a leisurely riverbank break with a hearty lunch, light snacks, and beverages, discussing strategies for the upcoming stretch. The extended trip allows for an in-depth exploration of advanced techniques and a relaxed immersion into the river environment. In the latter half, apply your skills with newfound confidence, experimenting with casts, dead-drift presentations, and strategic retrieves. Your guide provides tips, on-the-spot advice, and timely fly changes.

This experience prioritizes quality fishing time, balancing instruction and the exhilaration of a perfectly executed hookset. By the end, you'll have honed essential techniques, embraced the rhythm of Montana's rivers, and cherished an unforgettable, scenic stretch of water rich with fishing opportunities.

Absolutely, you are more than welcome to bring your own gear or try out any of the quality gear available from your guide.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes, all participants ages 12+ must carry a valid Montana Fishing License. Purchase your license online HERE or in person at a local license provider.

Where is the meeting point?

Most trips take place near Whitefish and Kalispell on the Flathead River. The meeting point may change depending on where you will be fishing. Some rivers are remote and require considerable driving time. Shuttle service is not always dependable in these more remote areas. We recommend having your own vehicle to have the most flexibility when choosing where to fish.

Yes, lunch and beverages are included on full-day trips. You are also welcome to pack your own food and drink.

What is drift boat fishing?

Drift boat fly fishing is popular across Montana and takes place in a hard-sided boat designed to float and drift along the water. Each boat holds 1 guide and up to 2 anglers comfortably.

What should I bring?

Bring a hat, polarized sunglasses, layered clothing, rain gear, sun shirt, quick-dry pants, and sandals or shoes that can get wet. Clothing should be appropriate for the weather. Waders and boots are recommended for cooler temperatures.

Is walk-and-wade style fishing available?

Most nearby rivers are commonly fished using a drift boat style. Wade-style fishing is available depending on the fishing location and seasonal access. Contact Glacier Tourbase for more information or submit a request.
