Memorable Authentic Montana Experience

Description

Cast your reel into sparkling rivers and discover why a Montana fly fishing trip turns any first-timer into a lifelong angler.

Your half-day fly fishing experience begins near Whitefish or Kalispell with a relaxed meet-up at a local river access point, where your guide will outfit you with rods and review safety and strategy before you step into the drift boat. With no experience necessary to learn the skills of fly fishing, you'll spend a few minutes of orientation on the water.

Take in the surrounding mountain views as your guide positions the boat in a gentle current and introduces a focused yet friendly lesson on casting technique, fly selection, and how to read seams, riffles, and tailouts.

The 4-hour trip balances instruction and fishing. Early on, hands-on coaching emphasizes fundamentals while drifting through quiet runs where trout hold, offering the chance to practice casts under real conditions. As the trip progresses, your confidence grows as your guide maneuvers to prime fishing spots—sheltered pocket water, shaded banks, and slow pools—pausing for expert tips on approach, leader selection, and matching the hatch.

Midway through, enjoy a short break along the riverbank with light snacks and beverages, discussing tactics for the next stretch. In the second half, apply skills with confidence, experimenting with casts, dead-drift presentations, and strategic retrieves. Your guide offers subtle corrections, lineside advice, and real-time fly changes.

This experience prioritizes quality fishing time, balancing instruction with the thrill of a well-executed hookset. By the end of the drift, you'll have refined essential techniques, experienced Montana's river rhythms, and enjoyed a memorable, scenic water stretch teeming with fishing opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring my own gear?

Absolutely, you are more than welcome to bring your own gear or try out any of the quality gear available from your guide.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes, all participants ages 12+ must carry a valid Montana Fishing License. Purchase your license online HERE or in person at a local license provider.

Where is the meeting point?

Most trips take place near Whitefish and Kalispell on the Flathead River. The meeting point may change depending on where you will be fishing. Some rivers are remote and require considerable driving time. Shuttle service is not always dependable in these more remote areas. We recommend having your own vehicle to have the most flexibility when choosing where to fish.

Is lunch included?

Lunch is not included on half-day fly fishing trips, but water and beverages are provided. You are also welcome to pack your own food and drink.

What is drift boat fishing?

Drift boat fly fishing is popular across Montana and takes place in a hard-sided boat designed to float and drift along the water. Each boat holds 1 guide and up to 2 anglers comfortably.

What should I bring?

Bring a hat, polarized sunglasses, layered clothing, rain gear, sun shirt, quick-dry pants, and sandals or shoes that can get wet. Clothing should be appropriate for the weather. Waders and boots are recommended for cooler temperatures.

Is walk-and-wade style fishing available?

Most nearby rivers are commonly fished using a drift boat style. Wade-style fishing is available depending on the fishing location and seasonal access. Contact Glacier Tourbase for more information or submit a request.
