Description
Experience the quiet magic of a Montana winter on this guided snowshoe trek in Columbia Falls. Perfect for first-time snowshoers and families, this easy-paced outing introduces you to the fundamentals of winter field exploration while revealing fascinating stories written in the snow. After a warm welcome and gear fit at the trailhead, your outdoor education expert leads a relaxed loop (up to three miles) through forest and meadow, stopping to identify animal tracks, explore winter plant adaptations, and explain the science of snowpack and weather. Along the way, you’ll learn simple navigation and safety tips for winter travel, how local wildlife survives the cold months, and ways to minimize your impact on fragile winter habitats.
Expect plenty of time for photos, questions, and hands-on discovery—plus a cozy hot chocolate when you return to the Nature Center. Snowshoes and poles are provided; guests should wear warm, waterproof footwear and layered clothing suitable for changing weather. Trails are generally gentle but can be uneven or packed with snow; a basic level of mobility and comfort walking for up to three miles is recommended.
This three-hour experience runs on winter weekends (Jan–Mar) and is ideal for families, outdoor-curious beginners, educators, and anyone who wants a calm, interpretive introduction to Montana’s winter landscapes. Learn from experienced naturalists, connect with the season, and leave with a deeper appreciation for the adaptations and stories of life beneath the snow
