Description

Experience one of Glacier National Park’s most iconic waterfall views on a guided hike to St. Mary Falls. This easy-to-moderate hike (~4 miles round trip) blends scenic beauty with engaging insights from an experienced Glacier Institute educator. You'll join a small group and friendly guide which includes transporation all throughout the national park and along Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Forget about the stress of parking limits and white-knuckled driving as you sit back to enjoy the view from your mini-bus and hit the trails with your friendly guide.

Along the way, you'll move at a comfortable pace and stop for insights into Glacier’s geology, wildlife, and natural history as you follow the out-and-back trail to a postcard-worthy cascade, St. Mary Falls. Perfect for visitors who want an immersive Glacier National Park experience, the trip highlights how fire, water, and ice have shaped the park’s valleys, forests, and mountain silhouettes.

Your experienced guide provides lively insights along the trail and at scenic overlooks, explaining how glaciers shaped the landscape, how water moves through the park, and where to spot wildlife.

At St. Mary Falls, you’ll reach one of the park’s most photographed waterfalls, where vibrant turquoise water cuts through the rock, offering a powerful look at the forces that continue to shape Glacier today. You’ll also stop at scenic overlooks near the historic site of the Sun Point Chalet, adding a glimpse into the park’s human history alongside its natural story.

This guided hike offers a thoughtful balance of outdoor adventure and meaningful insight, making it a great choice for visitors who want a deeper connection to Glacier without taking on a strenuous backcountry hike.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does this trip last?
This trip lasts between 2 ½ and 3 ½hours depending on the time of year and conditions. In early season (May and early June) the water is running high and trips move quicker with less paddling. In the late season (July-Sept) the water levels are lower and the float takes more time.
Which river will we be rafting on?
The whitewater float is on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River, one of Montana's Wild and Scenic rivers. You'll run 8 miles of river through the John F. Stevens Canyon with 9 class II-III rapids.
Is whitewater rafting safe?
Whitewater rafting comes with an inherent assumption of risk and it is your responsibility to adequately assess such risks before participating. Professional river guides undergo extensive training and are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to keep both themselves and you safe while on the river.
How likely is it to fall in the river? Will I get hurt?
All whitewater rafting participants assume the risk that they may fall into the river. Consider the time of year when you plan to book and the relative river flows at that time (i.e. you're more likely to fall in during the run-off season). Professionally trained river guides will provide safety instructions prior to departure and are certified in wildness first aid and lifesaving techniques.
What are the river flows currently like?
Rivers flows across Montana will change with the seasons and weather patterns. Traditionally, the early season (May/June) will bring more run-off resulting in faster flows and larger rapids while the later season (July-Sept) can see reduced run-off and slower flows with milder rapids. If you'd like to most current reports please contact Glacier Tourbase directly.
