Description
Paddle your way into a slice of lakeside paradise with this 2-hour guided adventure, perfect for families, beginners, or anyone looking for a fun experience on the water. Nestled along the northern shore of Flathead Lake, Somers Bay offers a calm and protected setting—ideal for all skill levels and especially welcoming to young paddlers.
Your journey begins at the Somers Bay boat launch, where friendly guides outfit you with everything you need: kayaks, paddles, safety gear, and a small backpack for personal items. After a short orientation, you’ll glide out onto glassy waters that reflect Montana’s expansive skies. With no strong currents or motorboat traffic to worry about, you can fully relax and soak in the scenery.
As you navigate the tranquil bay, you’ll trace the remnants of the historic Somers Lumber Company pier system and learn about the area’s turn-of-the-century timber history. The route continues through a chain of tiny, tree-topped islands known as the Juniper Islands. An excellent opportunity for wildlife viewing—bald eagles, ospreys, and other native birds often soar overhead or perch quietly in the trees.
The tour’s highlight is a full circumnavigation of the largest island in the chain, affectionately nicknamed “Gilligan’s Island” by the crew. Weather permitting, you might even pause here for a quick swim off the sand flats or a splashy jump into the lake—an exciting surprise that kids especially love.
Whether you choose a single or tandem kayak, every moment of this scenic paddle is guided with care, humor, and a deep appreciation for the natural and cultural history of the area. With departures offered daily at 10am, 1pm, and 4pm, it’s the ideal outing to plug into your Montana summer plans.
