Join an unforgettable kayak tour on Flathead Lake. This popular excursion takes you to Wild Horse Island, one of Montana's most unique state parks. This tour offers a truly incredible opportunity to explore the island on foot and from the water. You'll bookend the time on Wild Horse Island with a ~2 mile kayak journey from the shores of Flathead Lake.

At the start of the tour, you'll be outfitted with a comfortable and high-quality kayak along with paddling gear to keep everyone safe and secure while navigating the waters. You'll also be provided with a map of the island and all the information you'll need to complete your self-guided hike and exploration of Wild Horse Island.

Your personal guides lead you safely across the clear mountain waters from the shores of Dayton on the west side of Flathead Lake. The kayak tour is approximately two miles each way, taking around 60 minutes one way for most paddlers. You'll pass other islands along the way so you are never too far from shore.

To keep you fueled throughout the day, you'll also receive a delicious lunch wrap and snacks for lunch on the island.

After completing your hike through Wild Horse Island you hop back in the kayak and make your way back to the shore where you can head off to explore more of Flathead Lake by car.

What if I'm not a strong swimmer?

You shouldn't need to swim on this tour as the kayaks are quite stable. In the event you do tip, our guides can help you get back on your kayak and you'll always have a pfd (personal flotation device) when on the water. Additionally, people often find it comforting that we are close to the shores of Cromwell Island as we journey towards Wild Horse Island vs. being miles away from any shore.

Do you have tandem kayaks or only single kayaks?

We have both single or tandem kayaks for your Flathead Lake excursion. When you arrive to our office in Lakeside, MT we will get you outfitted with your kayak before heading ~20 minutes south to our put in for the journey.

What kind of wildlife can be seen on Wild Horse Island?

Wild Horse Island on Flathead Lake actually does have wild horses! The number of horses varies from year to year as they can cross to shore in winter. In addition to wild horses it is common to see big horn sheep, deer, bald eagles and other wild animals.

Can we bring kids along on this kayak journey?

All ages are welcome. For the little ones, we'll have them sit on your lap in a tandem kayak while your partner paddles. With that said, we generally recommend this tour for ages 5 and up given there are about 2 hours spent on the kayaks themselves as you head to and from Wild Horse.
