Description
Paddle across the sparkling waters of Flathead Lake and step onto a legendary island where wild horses and wildlife roam free. Our Wild Horse Island Kayak Tour invites you to explore a world few get to experience up close — where rugged landscapes, open trails, and native wildlife come together in one unforgettable adventure.
Your journey begins with a scenic paddle off the shoreline of Flathead Lake, but before heading out, your guide will help you gear up and get comfortable on the water. As you make your way across the lake’s expansive surface, keep your eyes open for bald eagles soaring overhead and the occasional bighorn sheep on the cliffs. Rather than a race to reach to island, this relaxed journey gives you time to enjoy the rhythm of the paddle and take in the panoramic lake views around you.
Landing on Wild Horse Island, you’ll switch gears and explore at your own pace. We’ll provide a backpack with a trail map, a pair of binoculars for wildlife viewing, a picnic lunch, and water for your adventure. Make sure you bring your camera — hiking the island is a real treat, and nearly every paddler successfully spots mule deer, bighorn sheep, or the elusive wild horses that call the island home.
During this time, you're welcome to break for lunch when you choose, whether you find a shady grove or a sunny outcrop, it’s your moment to relax, refuel, and soak in the surroundings.
After a few hours of exploration and leisure, you’ll regroup with your guide and begin the paddle back across Flathead Lake. With the warm afternoon sun along the way, the island starts to slip away, and you’ll finish the day proud and fulfilled that you experienced a true piece of untamed Montana.
No prior kayaking experience is needed — just a spirit for adventure and a sense of wonder!

Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of wildlife can be seen on Wild Horse Island?
Wild Horse Island on Flathead Lake actually does have wild horses! The number of horses varies from year to year as they can cross to shore in winter. In addition to wild horses it is common to see big horn sheep, deer, bald eagles and other wild animals.
Is this trip family friendly?
Yes, all ages are welcome! Younger children are welcome to sit on a parent's lap, or tandem kayaks are available as well. Given the physical requirements of kayaking to the island, we recommend this tour for ages 5 and up.
What if I'm not a strong swimmer?
You shouldn't need to swim on this tour as the kayaks are quite stable. In the event you do tip, our guides can help you get back on your kayak and you'll always have a pfd (personal flotation device) when on the water. Additionally, people often find it comforting that we are close to the shores of Cromwell Island as we journey towards Wild Horse Island vs. being miles away from any shore.
Do you have tandem kayaks or only single kayaks?
Yes, we have both single or tandem kayaks for your Flathead Lake excursion. During the checkout process, you will be asked to select the number of single or tandem kayaks you would like.
Where is the meeting point?
The meeting point is located on Flathead Lake at the public boat launch in Dayton, MT. If traveling from the Whitefish / Kalispell area, plan for about ~1 hour of travel.
What should I bring on the tour?
We recommend bringing water, sunscreen, a hat, quick-dry clothing, water-appropriate shoes, and a small daypack for personal items.
Why is Wild Horse Island important?
Wild Horse Island is a protected Montana State Park and one of northwest Montana's most iconic landmarks, home to a historic herd of wild horses, record-sized mule deer, bighorn sheep, and a unique ecosystem that offers a rare glimpse into Montana’s natural and cultural heritage. Known as "Qwil Qanqami" ("big island") by the Kootenai Tribe, it was used by tribal members who swam their horses across Flathead Lake to protect them from enemy raids.
