The Top 5 Hiking Tours in Flathead Lake

Flathead Lake, nestled in northwest Montana, offers many excellent hiking opportunities nearby. Surrounded by lush forests and rugged terrain, the lake's proximity to Glacier National Park and the Mission Mountains adds to its allure as a prime hiking destination.

One of the most iconic places to hike on Flathead Lake is on Wild Horse Island. You can kayak there or take a chartered boat and enjoy gorgeous views and yes, real wild horses!

Numerous trails around Flathead Lake provide accessible yet rewarding hikes for those seeking self-guided adventures. The Jewel Basin Hiking Area, located just a short drive from Bigfork at the north end of the lake, features over 35 miles of trails. Hikes range from moderate walks to challenging peaks, offering spectacular views over the Flathead Valley and the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

Our favorite near Flathead is climbing Mt. Aeneus (pronounced uh-nee-us), the tallest peak in the Swan Range, and is a moderate to difficult day hike. For those with young kids or looking for something with less elevation gain, Birch Lake is a fantastic option for a day hike to a beautiful mountain lake filled with trout and good views. It is ~3 miles each way with just over ~1,000 feet of elevation gain.

Another popular spot for free hiking alongside the lake is Wayfarers State Park, where trails like the Rocky Point Nature Trail offer gentle paths leading to stunning overlooks of the lake's crystal-clear waters. On the west side of the lake, the Blacktail trail system offers a rigorous climb with rewarding views.

Of course, Glacier National Park is just a 45-minute drive from Flathead Lake. For a more structured experience, guided hiking tours are available. These tours offer deeper exploration into Glacier Park's natural and cultural history and can enhance your visit by providing expert insights into the local flora, fauna, and geology.

Whether you choose a stroll along the lake shore or to head into Glacier, hiking around Flathead Lake promises breathtaking views and a chance to connect with Montana's pristine wilderness.
