Located on the west side, the lake is 10 miles long and surrounded by majestic mountains that create a stunning sunset and alpenglow backdrop. The lake transforms into a canvas of vibrant colors as the sun dips below the horizon. For a truly serene experience and unique view, consider going out on the lake via paddleboard or boat!

Apgar Village

Apgar Beach and the dock at the southwest end of the lake are among the most accessible and popular spots for spectacular sunsets and excellent photography opportunities. Less than 10 minutes from the west entrance of the park, they offer an incredible view of the lake and the dramatic mountain peaks that surround it.

Lake McDonald Lodge 

The lodge is located on the shore near the northeast end of the lake along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Enjoy wonderful views of the sunset at the beach and pair it with a lovely meal and drink at the fireside dining room and lounge!

For those looking for a serious hike, the panoramic views at the high-elevation Swiftcurrent Lookout are hard to beat!

Logan Pass

Logan Pass sits at the heart of the park and the highest point of the Continental Divide that you can reach via car. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, and watching the sunset from this elevation is a truly unique experience. You can also access the trailheads for two of the most popular hikes here, the Hidden Lake Overlook and the Highline Trail. The Hidden Lake Overlook Trail offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It is the perfect spot to watch the sunset behind the mountains while witnessing dreamy meadows and wildlife at the same time.

Big Bend

Halfway between The Loop and Logan’s Pass is Big Bend, a large turnout with one of the most spectacular vistas overlooking the Lake McDonald Valley and the dramatic peaks of Mount Canon, Oberlin, and Heaven's Peak.

The sunset reflecting off the lake's calm waters surrounded by stunning mountain peaks provide a breathtaking view. You can also enjoy an experience on the lake with a scenic boat cruise.

Two Medicine

Two Medicine Lake is located in the southeastern part of the park and is surrounded by towering mountains. The reflection of the mountains in the lake makes for an enchanting and stunning photo opportunity.

Swiftcurrent Lake

For a great vantage point and sunset views, head to the shores of Swiftcurrent Lake along the historic Many Glacier Hotel. You’ll enjoy unobstructed views of the tranquil lake, peaceful surroundings, and the grandeur of the mountains.

• Bowman Lake

Bowman Lake is the third-largest in the park. The peace and quiet of the location make it a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the sunset. There are excellent recreation opportunities here as well as both front country and backcountry camping.
